Hi Everyone,
Well the end of the season is here and autumn is on the way. Weatherwise this has been a far better summer than last. May, June and Sept were good and July/August not so good. However, we have had some great tennis. Our Mens North East Cheshire Team finished 5th in their division and, as the league is being restructured (again), we are now promoted to division 3. This is the right division for us and we should be able to hold our own next season. I am going to give the captaincy one more year (my 10th season) and then hand over the team to Joe Heard-White. Joe is kindly running the winter league team this year and is also now a member of the tennis and general committee.
The junior boys and girls teams have also had a good season, staying in their respective divisions.
Away from team tennis, we have had an impressive year for memberships with over £3000 banked again and making a vital contribution to the club. For financial reasons, the bar will not be open this winter. The club's finances will not permit. It is with a heavy heart that I say this but it is the right decision for the club. Our thanks go out to Colin, Julie, Jonathan for the great work they have put it over the years. I am very much hoping they will still be at the club serving those pints when the bar reopens in April.
During my summer holidays I have been busy in New Mills some of the time doing essential maintenance on the courts. The courts have been powerwashed and are playing really well. Next year we will be getting them resprayed at a cost of around £4,000. The courts will play well in all weathers now !!!
Away from New Mills and all the way over in new York, Juan Martin del Potro secured his first grand slam title with an amazing five-set victory over Roger Federer. The match was great, I wanted DP to win (although I was for Fed at the French Open). He could be the new world # 1 very soon. A great win and good for tennis. Kim Clijsters staged a remarkable return to the sport after having kids to win the US Open. Great to see her beat Venus and Serena. Great for tennis also !!!
See you on court
